How One Special Dog is Saving the Whales

Tucker2

Tucker is a 9-year old black Lab mix and the world’s only canine marine biologist. Formerly a stray on the streets of Seattle, this special __dog now spends his time sniffing out and tracking orca, also known as killer whales, off the coast of Washington.

You see, Tucker is the only __dog in the world that is able to find and track the scent of orca scat, or feces, in open ocean water — up to a mile away, even in the smallest of specks.

The New York Times reported on Tucker and his amazing job,

Scat can sink or disperse in 30 minutes or less. But it is crucial in monitoring the health of the whales here, an endangered group that is probably among the most studied animal populations in the world. Most of the 85 or so orcas, or killer whales, that frequent the San Juans, about two hours northwest of Seattle, have been genotyped and tracked for decades, down to their birth years and number of offspring. And none of this could happen as easily as it does without Tucker and his wet, black nose.

However, unlike bomb and drug-sniffing dogs that can lead their human partners right to the source of the scent, interpreting Tucker’s signals is a full time job in itself. “The slightest twitch of his ear is important,” said Elizabeth Seely, a trainer who has worked with Tucker for four years at a nonprofit group called the Conservation Canines, which specializes in dog-assisted research on behalf of endangered species.

The boat, in this case, is Tucker’s leash, and the using subtle leans, the captain can determine which way to steer the ship. Using his posture, stance, and level of interest, Seely can determine where the boat should be headed.

So how is Tucker rewarded for his hard work? With his ball! He is so utterly ball-driven, that he’ll work for play time. That’s why Conservation Canines is confident in training a second canine marine biologist, a flat-coated retriever named Sadie whose owner donated the dog to the program after being unable to break her of her ball fixation.

In frustration, the owner put Sadie’s ball on top of the fridge. Eight hours or so later, she returned and found Sadie still sitting there, staring up at the object of her desires.

So how does sniffing out scat and tracking orcas help to save this endangered species? Prof. Samuel K. Wasser, the director of the Center for Conservation Biology at the University of Washington and the director of the orca scat research project, said the team can determine whale stress levels by measuring stress hormones in their scat. He originally set out to determine if boat activity was causing the whales to be stressed, but with this important research, learned that a low food supply is a bigger stressor.

Knowing to focus on fish supply, he said, means knowing where to focus public policy efforts on the animals’ behalf.

As for Tucker, despite his hundreds of hours spent sniffing out orca scat on boats, this is one dog that refuses to get wet!

Here’s a video of Tucker, on dry land, clearly having a blast with his ball toy!

Vice Presidential Hopeful Mike Pence Mourns the Passing of the Family Dog

Although Indiana governor Mike Pence is on the campaign trail out west, his heart is back in the Hoosier state, mourning the loss of a beloved family member.

“Heavy hearts today,” the Vice Presidential hopeful tweeted Wednesday. “Our beagle of 13 years passed away quietly last night. Rest in Peace, Maverick. We will miss you.”

The campaign shared a photo of Pence and First Lady Karen Pence hugging Maverick, the furry family member they adopted in Virginia when he was 2 years old, on the doorstep of the governor’s residence.

Puppies crash a bachelor party in the woods

Bachelor parties have a reputation for debauchery, but this one has a decidedly softer side. A group of long-time friends from Vicksburg, Michigan, went to a cabin in the Tennessee woods for a long weekend of four-wheeling and celebrating bachelorhood one last time. They ended up rescuing a bunch of puppies.

It all started the first day in the cabin, when the guys were cooking bacon with the door open, said Trevor Jennings, one of the groomsmen. A __dog showed up at their door, lured in by the smell. The sweet __dog made frequent visits, happily and politely sharing their meals.

"After giving her food and water for a few days, we noticed she was protective of a certain area in the woods, especially at night," said Jennings, who has known the groom, Mitchel Craddock, since middle school.

They headed into the woods to investigate what the dog — quickly dubbed Annie after Little Orphan Annie — was up to. They found a deep den that the mom had made for seven puppies. The men pulled all the pups out of the den and brought them back to the cabin.

The puppies seemed healthy, but were dirty and full of fleas, so the guys headed off to the store for some puppy shampoo.

“We pooled a bunch of money to buy food and beer. After the third day, our beer fund turned into puppy food fund,” Craddock told ABC News.

After the guys gave Annie and all her puppies baths, there was no going back; the dogs spent the rest of the weekend hanging out with the guys in the cabin, Jennings said. When it was time to head back to Michigan, the dogs came along too.

All the pups found homes with either a member of the bridal party or extended family. Craddock's grandparents adopted Annie and one of her pups. Jennings has a cute brindle pup he named Gunner and the groom has a sweet cream pup named Brimmie. He said his bride-to-be was excited about him coming home with a new puppy.

“I proposed to her with our chocolate Lab, and now it’s our joke that for any of our big life events, we’ll get a dog."

Attack of the Licking Baby Floofs!

These adorable, golden floofs are SUPER DANGEROUS!  Just look at that poor guy, rolling around on the ground in obvious pain from all of the licking tongues!

Or this poor guy…  Just minding his own business when BAM!  Nine floofs enter the room and take him out!

And it’s not just the humans that are in trouble!  Take a look at what happens when some horrible human releases some puppies on a poor, unsuspecting cat!  How could they?!?

And finally, we have this poor soul.  He dared to try to take on 15 of the little beasts, and by the time they were done licking, there was nothing left of the man.  Another brave soul bites the dust!

Chihuahua Whose Human Died Gets Inmates as New Parents

4.8.16 - Chiller FEAT

Do not adjust your computer or phone screen, you are absolutely reading that correctly.  Chiller unfortunately lost his previous human when they passed away.  However, Chiller has a new home with some people that really love him.  They just happen to be inmates at the California City Correctional Facility.

4.8.16 - Chiller2

Chiller was rescued after his last human passed away.  With no other family members to take care of him, he had to go to a shelter.  Being that he’s an older dog, it may have been difficult to find him a forever home.  Once the new manager for the city correctional facility’s new canines and inmates rehabilitation program, they knew he was the dog for them.

4.8.16 - Chiller3

You wouldn’t be remiss in thinking that no one in the prison would be caught dead walking an elderly little Chihuahua around the yard.  While we couldn’t blame you for your thinking, you’d be dead wrong.  In fact, he’s just about the single most popular person in the entire facility.

4.8.16 - Chiller4

“They all want more masculine dogs,” said Zach Skow.  Skow is the founder of Marley’s Mutts, a rescue group working with the inmates as well.  “It’s really cool to see them with Chiller.”

4.8.16 - Chiller5

The program is titled Marley’s Mutts Positive Change Prison Program.  It’s all a big effort to curb the rate of recidivism amongst the prison population.  The in mates benefit from this program by teaching them both live skills, and also skills that would relate to finding a job once released for jail.  However the inmates aren’t the only ones getting something out of these sessions.  These dogs are all rescues that needed homes and love and attention as well.

4.8.16 - Chiller6

That love and attention is really benefiting Chiller a lot right now.  Before his human took his own life, Chiller was never more than a few feet away from him.  So when the police found his human’s body, Chiller was standing right there next to him, never wanting to be separated from his single favorite person in the world.

4.8.16 - Chiller7

This program was perfect for Chiller, because of his timid nature.  He gets very anxious quickly, and being in a kennel with all of those unfamiliar dogs and smells would have been hell for the poor little guy.  So getting into the prison program has been great.  The situation doesn’t seem to scare him half as bad, and he’s really coming around, and becoming friendlier every day.

Groom or Groomer?! MI Men Adopt Stray Dog & Pups at Out-of-State Bachelor Party

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

They headed to Tennessee to celebrate the impending nuptials of Mitchel Craddock with a five-day ATV-riding trip. Craddock would say goodbye to bachelorhood surrounded by his best buddies, enjoying time at a cabin in the woods. But the group would come back to their home state of Michigan with more than just memories.

“We were cooking bacon with the door open. The next thing you know, there’s this dog sitting right at the front door. She wouldn’t come inside, but she sat right there,” Craddock told MLive.

They named the dog Annie. She scarfed down all the men would give her, enjoying lots of cool, fresh water, as well. Naturally, the meal gave Annie incentive to linger.

“We’d ride for 4-5 hours, or go into town, and every time we’d come back she would either be sitting on our doorstep or under one of our trucks,” Craddock said.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

At some point, they noticed that Annie was lactating and upon a bit of investigation, they discovered her litter — seven puppies — squirreled away in a den just down the road. Despite Annie’s malnourished appearance, the pups, which were estimated at about 5-6 weeks old, were very healthy.

“We were proud of her,” Craddock said. “She gave everything she had to those puppies.”

He had no intention of taking a pup (he is already “dad” to a chocolate Lab!) but his bride-to-be insisted they keep one.

Once we got the puppies out of the hole, we knew we couldn’t just leave them, so we started figuring out where they would go,” he said.

Each of the men took one of the puppies, whom they named Brimmie, Rosie, Daisy, Knox, Gunner, Bear and Finn. Craddock’s grandparents took Mama Annie, as well as one of her pups.

We can’t think of better gifts for a gang of groomsmen!

Dog Battling Cancer Takes A Last Roll Around Town

Lowe

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Maverick is beloved, but ailing. The 9-year-old golden retriever is battling lymphoma for the second time and while the treatments, for now, appear to be helping, he is weak and unable to walk, so owner Joey Maxwell wanted to treat his dear friend to a final, joyful ride around town.

Home for Maverick is Deland, FL, and the local Lowe’s was on-hand to help this bucket list ride happen, loaning Maxwell a wagon so he could tote Maverick to and from his favorite haunts, allowing him to make new friends as he traveled. The journey was well documented on social media.

Everybody Loves Maverick, the dog’s Facebook page, reported several days ago that he was doing quite well, his condition stable for the time being. He’s even gotten a few more wagon rides in, to boot!

Maverick also has a GoFundMe page to help with cancer treatment costs. At press time, they were less than $2k shy of a $10,000 goal.

Proof That Dogs are Terrible at Hide-And-Seek

Dogs are highly skilled at a lot of things. Hide-and-Seek is not one of them. Here are 12 clear examples:

Abused Puppy Chased Down the Street With a 2×4 Is Now All Smiles

10-27-16-ivy-2x4-taf1

This comes from the devoted staff at Trio Animal Foundation in Chicago:

On October 10th they posted:  ONCE SHE BROKE OUT OF AN EMBEDDED COLLAR/ELECTRICAL CORD, THIS POOR GIRL WAS CHASED DOWN THE STREET WITH A 2X4…

TAF spent last night at the ER vet after being called about a puppy that needed emergency medical attention. Before Ivy was caught, a man was seen running after her with a 2×4. One can only imagine what her life has been like in the short 8 months that she has been alive.

Once at the ER, it was determined that Ivy once had a collar/electrical cord wrapped so tightly around her neck that it actually bore through her skin. This form of torture happened slowly and painfully over an extended period of time. The back of Ivy’s neck is scabbed over but the impression of the collar remains. Ivy’s throat is another story… it bears a large open slit, is swollen and pus drips from it. Infection has already set in and she has a high fever.

10-27-16-ivy-2x4-taf4

Ivy remains hospitalized at the ER Vet and has undergone sedation to have her neck shaved and the dead/rotting tissue cut away from her infected neck wound. We will know later on today the direction that her medical team choses to go in her recovery. Having a drain placed in her neck is a real possibility if her wound is not properly draining. Our main focus is keeping Ivy’s infection from spreading and the real threat of blood poisoning.

We will be visiting Ivy this afternoon and will keep you updated. Please keep Ivy in your thoughts and prayers.

A big thank you to a concerned citizen, named Jarod, who stopped to catch Ivy and to our friend Katie who played a part in getting her to us.

10-27-16-ivy-2x4-taf2

October 12th:   Ivy’s surgery to repair the deep, infected laceration she suffered from an embedded collar/electrical cord went well. The surgeon was able to remove all the necrotic (dead) tissue, flush out all the purulent fluid (blood/pus) and close the wound completely. Having this done will allow a complete recovery in 10-14 days. As you can imagine, after enduring such abuse, 8-month-old Ivy is having some trust issues. Because of this, we are going to work on some emotional rehabilitation so she is not set up for failure.

If you would like to help sponsor Ivy’s medical care, please consider making a tax-deductible donation at www.trioanimalfoundation.org. can earmark your donation “Ivy.” If you are making a donation via a smartphone and are not given the opportunity to earmark your donation, please forward your receipt confirmation to [email protected].

Please keep Ivy in your thoughts and prayers… she is just a baby and deserves so much more than life has given her.

10-27-16-ivy-2x4-taf5

On October 25th came a happy update:  Today, Ivy is doing very well and on her way to recovery. In the 10 days she has been back with TAF she has learned that people are nice, and usually have treats and toys. She has met several dogs, including hunky Miller (one of TAF’s therapy dogs… he is on the right)! Ivy had such a huge crush on him and couldn’t stop gazing at him and licking his muzz. The two of them played all afternoon and then hung out in the office while we worked on paperwork.

Ivy is crate trained and understands the idea that outside is the best place to go potty. She is still very much a young puppy, so she is learning some basic commands and manners.

Ivy will have her sutures removed later this week. We are very optimistic that she will make a full recovery, physically and mentally!

Africa Now Deploying Dogs Via Airdrop to Combat Poachers in the Wilds

To keep one leg up on the poachers in Africa, those that dedicate themselves to fighting against it must remain ever vigilant, and innovative in their approach.  So now, there is a team of dogs that are dropped into known poaching hotbeds via parachute, with a handler.  It’s all aimed at keeping other animals alive.

10-27-16-skydiving-dogs

Arrow and Giant are two of the dogs on the front lines as far as combating the poaching problem in Africa.  There are about 200 other dogs enrolled in the program as well, and training is underway.  All of the dogs will receive special training on tracking and other survival skills by the Paramount Group at the Anti-Poaching and Canine Training Academy.

Some might expect the dogs might not be that into the skydiving portion of things, but according to training staff, they actually take to it quite well.  A lot of time and effort is put into gaining a level of trust with the dog is such a way to make things like that a non-issue.  In fact, most of the dogs in the program trust their trainers so much, it rarely comes up in the course of normal training.

This Larger-Than-Life Dog is Instagram’s Biggest Rising Star

A Minnesota man and his dog, a Goldendoodle named Juji, are taking over Instagram with their larger-than-life adventures. Although normal-sized in real life, Juji appears 7-feet tall in their stunningly captivating photos.

Chris Cline, a graphic designer, was inspired by Calvin and Hobbes, a comic strip featuring a little boy and his stuffed tiger that, as long as no adults were around, would come to life as his over-sized best friend.

His photographs, though appealing to children, also remind adults of their innocent youth, when everything, including the family dog, seemed enormous and every moment with a __dog – who was just as big as you were – was an adventure.

Cline’s Instagram page (follow him @christophercline) began innocently enough after he began editing images to make Juji appear to tower over him. Today, he’s got tens of thousands of followers and offers the same service to other pet parents that want to relive their youth with a larger-than-life __dog by their side.

Just check out some his amazing, adventurous, and somehow heartwarming adventures!

But then again, most dogs are half his size. #barkbox #Bestdog #worldofcutepets #chrisandjuji #goldendoodles #dogsofinstagram #goldendoodlesofinstagram #weeklyfluff #rsa_graphics  #ig_underground #shotaward #dogsofinstaworld #dogsandpals #dogscorner #igbest_dogs  #excellent_dogs #dog #puppiesofinstagram #bestwoof #dailydoseopuppies #instadog #petscorner #animaladdicts #mydogiscutest #petsofinstagram #exklusive_shot #westminsterdogshow #westminster

It’s almost Halloween! Ghosts, goblins, zombies, or slasher movies…everybody loves to watch scary movies this time of year.

Although just about anything goes when it comes to horror flicks, animal lovers can all agree – we don’t care what happens, as long as the __dog doesn’t die!

Animal loving horror fans, you’re in luck! Here are 5 horror movies where the __dog lives!

Poltergeist (1982)

The Freeling family’s dog, E. Buzz, is one of the first characters to sense a ghostly presence in their new home – and the Golden Retriever makes it out alive in the end!

The Lost Boys (1987)

After moving to a new town, two brothers are convinced that the area is frequented by vampires. In The Lost Boys, not only does our favorite four-legged character survive, Nanook the Husky is a hero!

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Precious, the fluffy Miniature Poodle belonging to Buffalo Bill only appears in the movie for a few moments (and the adorable little yapper manages to squeeze in quite a lot of lines in her short time on screen!) but she plays a pivotal role in the capture of the killer.

Gremlins (1984)

A boy inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town. Luckily, sweet Barney the mutt is happily hanging with family at the movie’s end.

The Hole (2009)

When a pair of brothers stumble upon a mysterious hole in their basement, the family dog – a Pomeranian named Charlie – knows right away that there’s nothing good in that hole. Unfortunately, the kids don’t heed Charlie’s warnings…

Dog Loses Leg Protecting Owner from Armed Intruder

On July 23, 2013, an armed intruder broke into a home in Accomack County, Va., and shot Lefty, a female Pit bull, who came forward to protect her owner.

The intruder came in with a shotgun and when Lefty approached the trespasser, the armed individual shot the dog shattering the pet’s shoulder and tearing off the soft tissue from the canine’s front leg.

Lefty was taken to Atlantic Animal Hospital (AAH) were surgery was performed. Unfortunately the gun’s blast damaged her leg and it had to be amputated. The surgery cost was $1,500 and the hospital took to social media platforms to urge the public to donate and help cover Lefty’s medical expenses.

When AAH posted on their Facebook wall Lefty’s story, people started donating to help the hero dog that risked her life to save her owner’s. Enough donations came in and all medical expenses for this brave canine where paid in full.

“I was just amazed at how many people responded,” said Dr. Michele Leatherbury, owner of Atlantic Animal Hospital. “It was incredible.”

Lefty left the hospital on Monday, July 29, and is expected to make a full recovery under the loving care of her owner.

Abandoned Pup and Rescued Cow are Best of Friends

cow-dog

This isn’t the first time a friendship has formed between calf and canine. In fact, last year, Life With Dogs shared the story Rescued Calf Refuses to Believe He’s Not a Puppy, about a (then) two-year-old Great Dane, Leonidas, and Goliath, the cow. So it doesn’t seem all that out of place that an abandoned puppy, Bernie, and cow, Sri Rama, have become best friends.

As they share on their website, “Paramatma is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘God in the heart.’ Param: Supreme; Atma: Soul. So the main objective of our animal shelter is to teach the world that God is in the heart of all living beings.”

Dog Left Behind with Curbside Trash When Family Moves Away

A Michigan man says he watched as his neighbors packed up and moved away, periodically returning for furniture and personal items, but leaving their sweet, beautiful dog, Boo, left at the curb with the trash.

For days, Boo stayed right by his former family’s belongings. He never left, confused and lonely, waiting for them to return for him.

The neighbor gave Boo food and water and says he contacted every shelter and rescue in the area, but for an entire week, no one would help the abandoned Pit Bull. That’s when Mike Diesel, founder of the Detroit Youth and __dog Rescue stepped forward.

Detroit Youth & Rescue

Diesel spent two days visiting and sitting with Boo, hoping to build trust with the frightened, confused dog.

“As far as building up the trust that started Sunday the 16th at 2:30 p.m. when I arrived and I stayed that night until 1 a.m. talking and getting acquainted with Boo and feeding him different food items,” said Diesel.

On the second day, Diesel showed up with two sausage McMuffins and two hashbrowns to eat with Boo but ended up giving the __dog both. “It took another 4-5 hours that day before I ended up getting a leash around his neck and then we just sat on the ground and talked for 45 minutes before I had enough trust for him to allow me to pick him up and we went directly to the vet,” said Diesel.

Boo was taken to the Groesbeck Animal Hospital where he’s being treated for heartworms.

“Boo has warmed up to me in an amazing way already and truly shows and proves the Love of the pit bull and Trust they have in humans,” said Diesel.

Diesel created a Paypal account for Boo for those wishing to contribute to his care.

It’s almost Halloween! Ghosts, goblins, zombies, or slasher movies…everybody loves to watch scary movies this time of year. Well, here’s our little twist on the obligatory top horror movies list — all of these movies feature DOGS! That’s right, they’re all spooky movies starring our furriest four-legged family members. So grab a blanket, cuddle up with your pup, pull your feet up onto the couch so the boogie monster doesn’t get your toes — and check out some of these creepy dog movies this Halloween!

Cujo (1983)

Synopsis: Based on Stephen King’s psychological thriller, Cujo, a friendly St. Bernard, contracts rabies and conducts a reign of terror on a small American town.

Fun Facts: The good-natured St. Bernard that played the famous killer dog was a 200 pound happy pup named Daddy. In addition to the main canine star, there were 4 more St. Bernard actors, a mechanical replica, and a man in a __dog suit.

During filming, Daddy was such a happy boy that he’d often wag his tail during scenes where he was supposed to be scary and mean. He had so much fun on set that at one point, his handlers had to tie his tail down to his leg to keep it from wagging so much! Film editors missed one particular scene where Cujo is filmed from behind, ready to attack, but you can see his tail wagging enthusiastically.

The Breed (2006)

Synopsis: A group of five college kids are forced to match wits with unwelcoming residents when they fly to a “deserted” island for a party weekend. As it turns out, the island used to house a __dog training facility that had been shut down after a rabies outbreak, or so the friends are told…

Man’s Best Friend (1993)

Synospsis: A genetically mutated dog is stolen from the lab of mad scientist Dr. Jarret by news reporter/animal rights advocate Lori Tanner, who conceals it from the police in her home. The dog, Max, endowed with intelligence and other special abilities, is at first lovable, but also proves to be a ferocious, unstoppable killer.

Fun Fact: The dog used to portray the DNA-altered dog is a Tibetan mastiff!

Yes, Dogs Do Grieve

sadwindow

by Franklin Medina

Have you ever wondered if your __dog would miss you if you died? The answer is an unqualified “Yes.” Most animal behaviorists believe that dogs feel all the same emotions that humans do, and that includes grief.

Greyfriar’s Bobby

Most of us know the story of Greyfriar’s Bobby from reading about him in school, but just in case you slept through class, here’s a refresher course. Bobby was a Skye Terrier who was owned by John (Old Jock) Grey in the Scottish city of Edinburgh. Jock died in 1858, and for the next 14 years, Bobby lay on his grave in all manner of weather, grieving for his dead master. Townspeople brought Bobby food and water, and when Bobby finally died, they erected a monument to him in recognition of his loyalty.

The thing is, Bobby might not be the exception. Many animal behaviorists believe that dogs don’t grieve all that much differently from the way humans do, and they may miss their loved ones for a very long time.

How Long Does Grief Last?

People who have undergone grief counselling typically report depression following the death of someone they loved. Over time, the depression decreases. The time it takes can vary widely from person to person. Sometimes, a couple of months is all it takes, and oddly, this really doesn’t relate to the nature, length, or depth of the love. People who have been childhood sweethearts well into their senior years can sometimes get past it in little time. Other times, the grief may last much longer, and even require psychological help in order to move past it. Most psychologists believe that it can take about five years before we really feel that we will be okay without our loved one.

Dogs and Bereavement

When a __dog loses someone he loves, he can suffer the pangs of grief and depression the same way that humans do, and the extent to which he feels those emotions will depend on how closely bonded he was with the human. If the dog was very dependent on the human, or prone to separation anxiety when separated from that human, then he may not cope well with the loss. In fact, he may be in serious emotional pain. It is, at its essence, a type of extreme and protracted separation anxiety. The dog may quite simply be unprepared to deal with life without his beloved human.

Helping a Grieving Dog

If you have inherited a grieving dog, then you can do things to help. He will probably never forget his beloved human, but you can do things that you would do for anyone else who is grieving – in other words, understand how he feels. Try to think of activities that will take his mind off his loss, even in the short term. Play with him. Pet him. Take him for long walks so that when he comes back, he will slip into easy, restful sleep and gain some respite from the constant presence of grief. And most important, let him know that he is still loved. No longer by the person who meant the world to him, but by you.

Conclusion

It’s hard for anyone to get past grief, and it’s no easier for a dog who has lost someone he loved. Do the same things you would do for humans. Be kind and considerate. Let him know that there is still love in the world, and that you will offer it. In short, treat him the way you would want to be treated if you suffered a heart-wrenching loss.

Comical rescue kitties defy gravity in 'Pounce'

The last time we saw photographer Seth Casteel, he was capturing the whimsical portraits of underwater babies and underwater canines. Not only did his work go viral, the resulting photo books solidified him as a New York Times' bestselling author.

Now Casteel is back at it again. In his latest photo book, "Pounce," he's moved away from swimming pools and is casting his lens on the priceless expressions of rescue cats and kittens bounding and jumping through the air. All 80 of the featured feline images in the book are photographed in Casteel's "signature up-close, mid-action style."

To shoot this collection, Casteel relied on some simple yet effective tools — cat toys attached to his camera!

"After trying out hundreds of cat toys, I found a few that the kitties went wild over!" Casteel explains. "[Such as] the CatDancer! There's just something about the sporadic movement that just works! Try attaching a shortened CatDancer to the top of your camera so the lure is in front of the lens — and be ready!"

Staying in line with his commitment to do good in the world with his art, Casteel collaborated with animal shelters and rescue groups — including Best Friends Animal Society and Found Animals Foundation — to ensure that every cat he photographed benefited from the "adopt don't shop" movement, a growing push for cat owner wannabes to shelters instead of pet stores.

Determined to add this adorable photo book to your coffee table collection? "Pounce" is now available for purchase. To see more of Casteel's work, check out his website!

Worker Hears Cries of Help from Dog Stuck in 30-Foot Deep Hole

10-25-16-30-foot-hole1

A man by the name of Matt Mountie of Charlotte, North Carolina was working with a crew installing some solar panels when he heard a strange noise off in the distance.  He wasn’t sure at first, but it sounded like cries for help.  After getting through a hole in a fence at an old nuclear power plant, he discovered a dog was trapped in a 30-foot deep hole in the ground.

The hole was about the size of a standard manhole, and was filled with water.  All that could be seen was the dog’s head poking out of the water below.  Mountie got on the phone with the Hawkins County Central Dispatch, and they contacted the local humane society.

The humane society thought they might send a couple of people down the hole on ropes to rescue the dog.  However, once Assistant Chief Curtis Winegar with the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew arrived and assessed the situation, he thought that it would be safer if two of his people went down instead, using the proper safety gear.

10-25-16-30-foot-hole2

The problem was, the longer they waited, the more difficult it was for the dog to keep his head above the water.  They wanted to set up a proper tripod, and get all of the other safety gear ready, but time became an issue quicker than anyone had thought.  The dog’s head was starting to dip below the water level, and Winegar knew he had to act fast.

“We had initially contemplated using a rope and a noose to lift the dog out — kind of hook the dog with the noose and pull him out of the hole — but we were afraid that we would cause injury to the dog,” said Winegar.  “Over the last 30 minutes, the condition of the dog deteriorated quite a bit.  We were all in agreement that we didn’t have time to rig a confined-space rescue, so we went to the backup plan and noosed the dog out.  He was uninjured.”

It may have taken a considerable amount of time to get the dog out, but the rescuers eventually did manage to do it.  He was then taken to an animal hospital for further evaluation.  At this time, the dog is listed in stable condition.  He is expected to make a full recovery.4

After Four Years in the Shelter, Dreadlock Gets Adopted!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Dreadlock came to the shelter four years ago, his skin in shambles, his fur filthy and matted (hence his name).

Life with the volunteers turned him around, of course. They have found that like most doggies he loves his cuddles and his walks. Now 10 years old, he is a mostly quiet, older dog with a placid demeanor.

So imagine everyone’s delight when Dreadlock was finally adopted to see his jovial, energetic reaction! He is now on his way to a forever home in the U.K.

Rhesus Monkey Adopts Orphaned Street Puppy, and It’s Just the Cutest Thing

10-26-16-rhesus-monkey-adopts-orphaned-street-puppy1

Whenever humans need a lesson on how to be selfless and compassionate, they need look no further than the animals around them.  It’s already hard enough for the macaques in India to find food, water, and shelter for themselves, so it surprised and warmed the hearts of many passersby to see one who took in a helpless puppy.

10-26-16-rhesus-monkey-adopts-orphaned-street-puppy5

Locals witnessed the monkey protecting the little guy from adult street dogs and were so impressed that they offered the pair some food.  The puppy was even given first dibs!

“People who have seen them all spoke of their strong mutual affection and described their bond as the most caring thing in the world,” onlooker Sasi Kumar told Indian news outlet Zee News.

“To take care of a puppy in danger and protect him like a parent, their undying affection gives us a valuable lesson about relationships.”

The incident wasn’t isolated, either.  She could be seen carrying the puppy around, leaping from branches with him in tow,  and grooming him, which is a bonding experience for social groups of animals.

Monkeys are very intelligent and resourceful, so who knows – maybe this was just a ploy to get some extra snacks from people.  But it’s far more likely that she was cast out from her troop or lost her own baby and was looking for a companion to care for.  In any event, it’s adorable, and hopefully their love is still going strong.
