Some Heroes Wear Fur: Getting to Know Our Military Working Dogs

military

Today, as we honor and remember those who have served in our armed forces, we’re taking a moment to recognize another kind of hero, wearing a different kind of __dog tag: The Military Working __dog (MWD).

The first documented use of dogs in war dates back to 600 B.C. and the military working dogs’ value and use has only continued and expanded from there. While MWDs serve a number of important functions for our military, least of which includes providing emotional support for our servicemen and women, one major, unparalleled skill is bomb-detection. Military working dogs have directly contributed to saving countless lives. In fact, the Pentagon spent $19 billion between 2004 and 2010 to develop a machine that would be capable of detecting bombs with the speed and accuracy of a trained military working dog – and failed.
