In breaking news that’s breaking hearts all across Canada and all over the world, a report is coming out of Quebec that says a court of appeals has reinstated the BSL on pit bulls in the city of Quebec. This comes in the wake of the bill being suspended by a judge back in October saying the language of the bill lacked clarity.
The RSPCA of Montreal said that the news comes as a disappointment to everyone that has worked so hard to stop the bill from becoming law. They maintain that the BSL that’s been set up in other cities and provinces across Canada and the United States hasn’t exactly worked out in the way the laws are aiming to, and won’t solve any problems.
“If the city of Montreal truly wanted to ensure public safety, it would not have forced a rush adoption of controversial legislation which is unfair, unenforceable, and, most importantly, ineffective,” they said to CBC News.
The laws going back into effect has many local animal rights groups taking to social media to speak out against the move. In fact, the SPCA of Niagara County in the United States took to Facebook to say:
“It is a bad time to be a pit bull type dog in Montreal. The courts ruled against the Montreal SPCA today and BSL has immediately gone into effect with some minor changes to the original law. Hold your kitties tight and train them right and always keep them in your sight because BSL exists in our backyard and could happen here. Irresponsible owners who allowed their dogs to become a menace caused this. Don’t be that owner.”
Montreal is not alone in adopting BSL, specifically against pit bulls, in Canada. Many places have created laws against people adopting them, and besides it being unfair, it just doesn’t work. At the end of the day, it’s discrimination. The move has many other cities nervous, because just like the SPCA of Niagara County said, every time a new city adopts these laws, it makes them coming into your city that much more likely.
Animal rights advocates in Montreal are also already saying that they’ll be fighting this in another court of appeals as soon as possible. Stay tuned to Life With Dogs, as we will be bringing you more information as it’s released.
