It’s the holidays! The time of year for families to gather together to celebrate traditions, share old memories, and make new ones. This year, as you surround yourself with family and friends, both two-legged and four-legged alike, remember there are millions of dogs in shelters, patiently waiting for a family of their own.
For some, this won’t be their first, second, or even their third Christmas behind bars.
It’s our Christmas wish that every __dog in rescue would find a home for the holidays, so we’ve selected 12 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend the holidays with a family of their own.
We’re calling this the 12 Dogs of Christmas. The Dogington Post along with our friends at Wellness Natural Pet Food have joined forces to introduce you to 12 needy dogs in hopes that they’ll finally get noticed…and maybe get a home for the holidays!
Meet Mariah!
Name of Shelter or Rescue Organization: Great Babies Rescue, Inc.
Type/Weight: Great Dane/ Large/ Female Age: Between 3 and 4 years old
How long in rescue: 3 years
Mariah’s Story:
Mariah came to us from Mississippi at the age of approximately 4-6 months old. We were contacted by a couple of young ladies who saved Mariah from being euthanized by a Back Yard Breeder.
Mariah, at a young age, got one of her rear legs hung up when she fell off of a deck. She hung by her rear leg for numerous hours before being found and was never taken to the vet for proper care. This caused significant damage to her rear leg in which the bones were twisted and then fused together and now her back leg is stuck straight.
The young ladies contacted us for assistance with getting her placed in a home as they could not keep her. We met them in Nashville, Tennessee, and Mariah has been with us ever since.
Mariah still has the leg. With her being so young, our vet did not want to amputate the leg, in order to prevent her from having hip issues in the future. Since the leg was healed, albeit stuck straight, Mariah uses it just like any other part of her body and does not let it slow her down one bit! She looks different than other dogs, but that is what makes her special. She does not know that she is any different and the deformity does not stop her one bit. To see this girl, play with the other dogs, run, climb stairs, and just live life is amazing to watch. How she has learned to adapt and learn to shine is inspiring. Unfortunately, because she does look different, she is overlooked.
Mariah Likes:
Loves being the center of attention, is a true Diva. Loves to run and play
Dislikes:
Mariah doesn’t really have any dislikes that come to mind. She is easy going and is full of life and energy. Sometimes she is selective with her canine friends.
Special Considerations:
Mariah really does not have any special considerations other than keeping an eye on the tip of the paw of her “peg”leg. If she runs a lot on concrete she gets a raw spot.
Mariah’s perfect family or home:
The perfect family for Mariah would be a home without very small children. Although Mariah gets along great with kids, her one leg can be a trip hazard when she gets the zoomies. It would be a family that loves to give her attention and make her their princess.
Does Mariah sound like a perfect fit? Here’s how to begin the adoption process
To learn more about adopting Mariah, please go to our website greatbabiesrescue.org and fill out the pre-adoptive home questionnaire. For more information, please contact Terry at 812-653-1985.
Great Babies Rescue takes the adoption process quite seriously and it is not done overnight. We pride ourselves as not only adopting out our dogs, but also adopting in families. We have an application and a contract that needs to be completed in order to begin the process.
