It’s the holidays! The time of year for families to gather together to celebrate traditions, share old memories, and make new ones. This year, as you surround yourself with family and friends, both two-legged and four-legged alike, remember there are millions of dogs in shelters, patiently waiting for a family of their own.
For some, this won’t be their first, second, or even their third Christmas behind bars.
It’s our Christmas wish that every __dog in rescue would find a home for the holidays, so we’ve selected 12 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend the holidays with a family of their own.
We’re calling this the 12 Dogs of Christmas. The Dogington Post along with our friends at Wellness Natural Pet Food have joined forces to introduce you to 12 needy dogs in hopes that they’ll finally get noticed…and maybe get a home for the holidays!
Meet Elijah!
Name of Shelter or Rescue Organization: North Fork Animal Welfare League, Inc., New York (Transport available outside of NY!)
Age: 7 years
How long at shelter/rescue: Over 3 years
Type/Size/Sex: Male, neutered Terrier-mix, 75-pounds
Elijah’s Story:
Elijah’s story is one that’s all too common. He was found in March 2013 wandering along the highway as a stray. He waited at the shelter for so long for his family to come, but, sadly, no one ever came to claim him. He was so heartbroken. It’s hard for us to believe that no one was looking for this lovable guy!
Once you meet him, you will understand why he is a favorite among the volunteers! Elijah is a very special boy. He loves to run and play and can amuse himself for hours playing and with his Jolly Ball. He has been in the shelter almost 4 years, which is so heartbreaking. Likes: Elijah LOVES going for long walks and playing with people. Despite being an older guy, Elijah has plenty of energy and would love an active family to have fun with.
Dislikes: Cats!
Special Considerations: Elijah is high energy and would do best in a home with no young children, no cats, and probably would be best as an only dog. Although that may be workable with a proper introduction.
Elijah’s Perfect Family: An active, loving family that wants a __dog to enjoy life WITH! Elijah is great in the car and would be so happy to have a family to do fun things with! He will quickly win your heart and be your best friend!
Elijah will soon face his FOURTH Christmas without a family all his own.
