It’s the holidays! The time of year for families to gather together to celebrate traditions, share old memories, and make new ones. This year, as you surround yourself with family and friends, both two-legged and four-legged alike, remember there are millions of dogs in shelters, patiently waiting for a family of their own.

For some, this won’t be their first, second, or even their third Christmas behind bars.

It’s our Christmas wish that every __dog in rescue would find a home for the holidays, so we’ve selected 12 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend the holidays with a family of their own.

We’re calling this the 12 Dogs of Christmas. The Dogington Post along with our friends at Wellness Natural Pet Food have joined forces to introduce you to 12 needy dogs in hopes that they’ll finally get noticed…and maybe get a home for the holidays!

Meet Frieda!

Name of Shelter or Rescue Organization: Grateful Dogs Rescue, San Francisco, California

Age: 11 years old

How long at shelter/rescue: Since July 13, 2014 — 2 years and 4 months

Type/Size/Sex: Chihuahua – Miniature Pinscher mix / 7 pounds / Spayed Female

Frieda’s Story:

Frieda was brought to a local vet after an accident, and they diagnosed her with a broken pelvis that they said would require expensive surgery.  The family could not afford it so they surrendered her to the shelter and left so fast that they didn’t even give her name.   By the time we got Freida, her pelvis was healing well and the vet said that she just needed a few more weeks of kennel rest.

Once the vet felt Frieda was healed, we took her to be spayed and pointed out a hard lump near a mammary gland.  The vet removed the lump and 3 of her mammary glands.  The tumor was malignant but the vet thought he got it all.  Six months later we found a lump near another gland and she had surgery again and 2 glands removed.  At that point we thought the chances were not good for her to remain cancer-free and we found a fospice home for her, but after a year she was still cancer-free and her lungs are clear of lesions so we decided that she still deserved her forever home and made her available for adoption.

freida-2-2Special Considerations: Frieda is fine with dogs, but doesn’t like cats.  She knows how to use a __dog door.  She is not now on any medication.  She is tiny so any yard needs to be very secure. She is a sweet cuddly girl with so much love and devotion to give to someone. She is about 7 pounds and 11 years old. Don’t let her age fool you, she loves to go explore the world on her walks and at home she wants nothing more than to warm her person’s lap. Freida is sometimes a door dasher but only because she wants to go too; she has gotten pretty good in her foster home at knowing when she can go and when she can’t. Frieda is house trained and will use a dog door but sometimes needs to be reminded, especially if it is raining.

Frieda’s Perfect Family: Frieda would love a home with a retiree who is looking for a walking and cuddle companion.

Frieda will soon face her third Christmas without a family all her own.
