It’s the holidays! The time of year for families to gather together to celebrate traditions, share old memories, and make new ones. This year, as you surround yourself with family and friends, both two-legged and four-legged alike, remember there are millions of dogs in shelters, patiently waiting for a family of their own.
For some, this won’t be their first, second, or even their third Christmas behind bars.
It’s our Christmas wish that every __dog in rescue would find a home for the holidays, so we’ve selected 12 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend the holidays with a family of their own.
We’re calling this the 12 Dogs of Christmas. The Dogington Post along with our friends at Wellness Natural Pet Food have joined forces to introduce you to 12 needy dogs in hopes that they’ll finally get noticed…and maybe get a home for the holidays!
Meet Boomer!
Hi, Boomer here….
I know I’m not the cute cuddly little puppy that everyone ooh’s and ahh’s over.
I know I have awful scars on my front legs that make me less appealing.
I also know that me not wanting to play with other dogs isn’t so fun for some humans.
I know all these things keep getting me passed over while all the other lucky pups find their special humans.
But….
I am cute and cuddly. I love to snuggle and love on my humans (both adults and kids). It’s my favorite part of the day. Unlike a puppy though, I don’t nip, I potty outside, I already know my commands and I like my kennel.
My legs are all healed after being hit and dragged by a car…then left in the street. My scars don’t bother me and my legs worked great…they are always ready for a nice walk or a good game of fetch.
It’s true, I don’t like other dogs. But it’s also true that I have learned to behave if they are around. I don’t bark, growl or lunge…I will sit like a good boy. I just don’t like if they come by my face. My manners are as strong as my dislike so no need to worry about me being naughty.
I’m am a sweet baby boy who just wants a home with a family to love me…imperfections and all. I know there is a special human for me just like all the other dogs, someone who will love me just as I am. My love and loyalty will never waver and I will love you forever.
Name of Shelter or Rescue Organization: Pit Crew Illinois Rescue
Type/Weight: Pit Bull Mix/medium 54lbs/Neutered Male Age: Boomer will turn 4 on January 13th (DOB: 1/13/13)
How long in rescue: 3 years
Boomer’s Story:
Boomer was hit and dragged by a car in August 2013. He was completely de-gloved on both front legs and the shelter in Georgia was going to put him down due to his injuries. Pit Crew Illinois saw something special in Boomer and took him in. He underwent several surgeries on his front legs to try and piece the skin back on his paws and legs, plus suture some other wounds on his body. Unfortunately his injuries and him being white left some pretty horrible scars on both legs. Aside from some scarring, he has no lasting health issues with all he went through.
Boomer Likes:
His humans, long walks, zoomies, snuggling.
Dislikes:
Other dogs, cats, people taking away his bones.
Special Considerations:
Boomer used to like dogs but sadly due to his injuries and his fear of being hurt more sometime during his recovery he developed a fear of other dogs. He has gone through extensive training and is fostered in a high volume __dog area. He does well with the leave it command with other dogs and can continue on his way without reaction most of the time. If he feels threatened or a dog barks/growls he can be reactive but does correct with help. He really needs to be an only pet. The only other little quirk we have seen is strange men coming over. If he doesn’t meet them outside and walk in with them he should be in a crate while they are there as he can be protective if it’s a female owner. If he meets them outside and they come in together he does fine.
Boomer’s perfect family or home:
The perfect home for Boomer would be a house that can offer him structure and continued training. He thrives on routine and the more he trusts his human the better he deals with anything that spooks him. His training program is in place and he does very well with it so we would like to see that commitment to continuing what he needs. He is very loyal and loving. He does great with all the kids of different ages he’s met but we feel older kids would be less overwhelming for him (to many young kids having a play date may be overwhelming for him). Boomer loves his zoomies and can be vocal while playing, so someone who won’t fear that would be great. Boomer enjoys going for long walks and does great if you are a runner needing a partner!
Does Boomer sound like a perfect fit? Here’s how to begin the adoption process
Find more information at pitcrewil.org, [email protected], or visit PitCrewILRescue on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/PitCrewILRescue/
We have discounted his adoption fee to $50 (from $250) for an approved adopter. We require an application and a home check. His forever family will also have training support for the life of Boomer. If they are close to Chicago, we offer free training weekly to all our adopters on most Sunday’s throughout the year (minus if we have an event or the weather prevents).
Will Boomer finally find his forever with you?
